Mike published an Amazon Kindle book of fiction that includes short stories, poetry, and reflective notes. The framework of the text is that Piero is publishing these texts which belong to the late Matthew Poe, a friend of his. The texts weave an interesting portrait of a man who lives outside the box of cultural normalcy.

Mike's opinion piece "How to close the achievement gap" was published on September 13, 2009 in The Post Newspapers.

Mike became a member of the Modern Language Association.

Mike has begun working on a dystopian novel somewhat along the lines of Orwell's 1984, but updated with the latest technology and a bit more character-driven. It also has a focus on education. He is hoping that the manuscript will be ready for publication by Summer 2011.

"The School Shooting" - 4,987 words - A new short story that deals with an unusual school shooting at a high school in Detroit's inner city. It is sad that a word like "unusual" can even be used in conjunction with a school shooting.

"The Unseen" - 4,644 words - A retelling of the story of Lazarus and the rich man that takes their journey into Hades to a new level, even blurring the lines between good and evil.

"Chasing His Tail" - 2202 words - A short story telling of a fight between a newlywed couple, it flashes from the fight to the origins of the disagreement in real time.

Mike is working on some new short stories, which include the following:
"Into the Light" - 1,785 words - A desperate man plots to experience a certain divinity in light, which has become an obsession in his life.
"Perpetual Testing" - 4,438 words - A former teacher takes the GRE entrance exam, but gets more than he bargains for in the process.
"And the Greatest of These is Love" - 4,775 words - A selective documentary club at Harvard University is treated to the disturbing tale of one of its member's experiences in a coercive, christian cult.
